The Gold Coast, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country, is less a true "city" and more a collection of combined suburbs stretched out along a 100km stretch of coastal land and beaches. As opposed to the conventional "circular" fashion of a traditional city, the Gold Coast is a long strip that extends from Coomera in the North down to Coolangatta (the location of the Gold Coast's international airport) in the South. This thin format makes the Gold Coast a relatively easy region to navigate for tourists - most of the major attractions, such as its theme parks, and suburbs are located at intermittent points along either the Gold Coast Highway or Pacific Motorway, and can thus be reached without the confusion associated with attempting to navigate through a more complicated city Central Business District.

The Gold Coast also has one of the largest systems of man-made canals in the world - larger than the waterways of both Venice and Amsterdam combined - which provide even more of an aquatic atmosphere to the region.
